Mike Grey is no stranger to the sport of wrestling, or the pressure of performing at the highest level. At Delbarton, Grey went 158-2, becoming the first wrestler in the state of New Jersey to win four straight state championships. Fast forward to 2023, Grey is now the head coach of the Cornell University wrestling program, with one of his own wrestlers winning his fourth NCAA title this year.
Grey joined the Cornell staff in 2011 as a volunteer assistant after graduating and two years later was elevated to assistant coach. In 2019, Grey was promoted to to associate head coach and in 2021 was named the David Dunlop '59 Head Coach of Wrestling. Since joining the staff at Cornell, Grey has helped lead the program to eight Ivy League and six EIWA titles, as well as top 10 NCAA team finishes each year.
In 2023, Grey would lead Cornell to a 3rd place overall title at the NCAA Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Two of Cornell's wrestlers would go on to win NCAA Championships, Vito Arujau at 133lbs and Yanni Diakomihalis at 149lbs. Yanni, like Grey, would win his fourth and final NCAA championship in Tulsa, becoming only the 5th wrestler in history to win four titles. Arujau would take home Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament, but it was coach Mike Grey who also came home with some extra hardware, receiving the NWCA's National Coach of the Year Award after winning both the EIWA and Ivy League titles and guiding Cornell to a third-place finish, including two national champions.
To cap off the weekend, Grey was also inducted into the NJSIAA Hall of Fame on Sunday, March 19. While Mike was not able to attend, his son Declan and brother Mark were in attendance to accept the award on his behalf.
Congrats to Mike and his family on this truly special honor.
