The 2022 JV Soccer Team had another great year on South Gate. Behind the leadership of the entire junior class, captained by Ryan Hunt, the team posted a record of 14-1-1, outsourcing opponents 51-8. The boys embraced and embodied the typical South Gate grit that JV soccer has become famous for while matching it with exceptional talent and ability.
The team opened against St. Benedict's, losing in overtime to the top program in the nation. In the following ten games, the boys outscored opponents 32-4 with wins over local talent including Mendham (7-0), Chatham (2-1, 2-1), and Morristown (4-0). This stretch also included signature wins on the road against tri-state powers such as Don Bosco (2-1) and CBA (1-0). Their first, and only, tie came against an exceptionally talented Chaminade team (1-1). They finished out the final games of the season by outsourcing opponents 19-2.
This team will be remembered for their nearly impenetrable back line, tenacious offense, and unrivaled pace of play. The talent and chemistry the boys had this year puts them as one of the best JV teams in recent memory. The talent of our sophomores and juniors was matched by their maturity, grit, and leadership. While the juniors led from the front, it was a team effort bolstered by the sophomores and their willingness to buy into our mentality. Everyone held everyone else accountable, they picked each other up when they were down, and they rejoiced in each other's successes. This season was one of the finest displays of Delbarton Brotherhood that I have ever seen.
Though the details of the practices and games will fade, we will always remember this season, the relationships, and good times we all had. A very sincere thank you to the boys for making this season memorable in unquantifiable ways.
Long live South Gate.
