In a battle of two top-ranked teams, Delbarton edged out St. Peter's Prep 1-0 in a tense matchup yesterday, maintaining their unbeaten streak and punching a ticket to the NJSIAA Non Public A North Final. A second-half goal by senior standout Liam McElderry, assisted by Peter Lines, was all it took for the Green Wave to move past the formidable Marauders, who entered the game at 19-3.
Both teams displayed defensive prowess during a scoreless first half, with opportunities limited for each side. Delbarton controlled much of the possession, resulting in a 6-2 edge in shots on goal. St. Peter's Prep goalkeeper Anthony Novello was tested, recording five saves to keep his side in contention.
The game's turning point came in the 43rd minute off a free kick when a deflected kick and header landed on the head of Peter Lines, who sent a pass in front of the net, setting up McElderry, who showcased precision and poise by finding the back of the net. On the defensive end, Delbarton goalkeeper Sebastian Rubio played with composure, stopping both shots he faced to secure the shutout.
Delbarton's relentless offensive pressure and disciplined backline proved key, extending their unbeaten run and sending Delbarton back to the sectional final. They now prepare for their toughest opponent of the season, facing the #1 nationally ranked St. Benedict's Gray Bees in the final, this Friday at 4pm from Rutgers Newark.
