Delbarton is heading back to the sectional final after grinding out a 2-1 win over a resilient Bergen Catholic squad in Monday's Non-Public A North semifinal in Oradell.
The Green Wave wasted little time setting the tone. In the 6th minute, Liam Murphy pounced on a pass in front of the net from Owen Miller and buried a header to give Delbarton an early 1-0 advantage. But Bergen Catholic responded quickly—Frank Burns placed a perfect shot off a free kick from 30 yards out just three minutes later to level the score, setting up a back-and-forth first half full of intensity and physical play.
Delbarton controlled much of the possession after halftime, building steady pressure through the midfield and wide play from Dylan Mazzarella, Cortland Martin and Matt Brusco. The breakthrough finally came in the 74th minute when Peter Wynne found himself on the end of a pinpoint cross from Mazzarella on a corner kick and perfectly placed a header into the far side to put the Green Wave back on top, 2-1.
Down the stretch, Delbarton's back line—anchored by Peter Lines, Skanda Damaraju, and Will Antenen—held firm to keep Bergen Catholic from finding an equalizer. Goalkeeper Vayun Swamy made two key saves to preserve the victory.
With the win, Delbarton (now 18-2-1) advances to the NJSIAA Non-Public A North sectional final, where they will face St. Benedict's Prep on Thursday.
