Delbarton varsity soccer showed grit and composure in a 2-0 win over Randolph on Thursday afternoon, despite playing a man down for nearly the entire second half.
After playing to a 0-0 first half tie, the Green Wave were dealt a major blow in the 45th minute when senior defender Will Antenen was shown a straight red card for denying a scoring chance as the last defender. Forced to play the final 35 minutes with 10 men, Delbarton tightened up defensively and leaned on goalkeeper Sebastian Rubio, who came up with seven saves to preserve the shutout, his first of the season.
The Rams had opportunities to take the lead, but Rubio came up big. After a Lines foul in the box, the PK rang off the post, keeping the score even at 0-0. The breakthrough came in the 57th minute when Franco Piarulli was fouled hard from behind in the box, resulting in a penalty kick. Senior captain Peter Lines would score on the PK, putting Delbarton up 1-0. After an inadvertent handball in the box just 7 minutes later, Dylan Mazzarella would calmly bury another penalty kick to give Delbarton a 2-0 lead.
From there, Delbarton's back line held firm, with Rubio anchoring a defense that refused to crack despite constant pressure from Randolph's attack.
With the win, the Green Wave improved to 2-0 on the young season, showing early signs of both resilience and depth.
