Delbarton Soccer Battles Though Tough Weekend Schedule

The Green Wave faced three tough opponents over a span of 72 hours as they fell to 7-2-1 this season.  Over the weekend, the Green Wave hosted St. Augustine and Chaminade as part of the Delbarton Soccer Invitational.

On Friday, the Green Wave fell to St. Augustine 2-0 in a battle of two of the state's top soccer programs.  The teams played a very tight defensive battle in the first half, but at the 15 minute mark, St. Augustine capitalized on a turnover and Frankie Brown placed a perfect pass in the front of the box to John Lamanteer for the 1-0 Hermits lead.

The Green Wave had some quality chances in the second half, but could not get quality shots on goal as the Hermits swarmed the Green Wave on every pass attempt and used their height advantage to win a lot of balls in the air.  In the 76th minute, Mike Coluzzi scored off a rebound from a corner kick and doubled the Hermits lead to 2-0. That would be more than enough for Matt Carr who made 6 saves in the victory.

On Sunday, the boys took on one of New York's top programs Chaminade in the final game of the invitational.  An own goal 15 minutes in gave the Flyers a 1-0 lead that would stay through halftime.  However, freshman Cortland Martin scored 5 minutes into the second half to tie the game 1-1 off a deflection from a free kick.  Chaminade would reclaim the lead in the 64th minute on a penalty kick to take a 2-1 lead.  However, in the 79th minute Liam Murphy would tie the game 2-2 ripping a shot off a header from Owen Miller.  Both teams would battle through two overtime periods, but would finish the game 2-2 tie.

Capping off a busy 72 hours, Delbarton traveled down the road to take on rival Mendham.  The teams faced each other in the season opener where Delbarton won 3-1. However, Mendham battled the Green Wave all afternoon, coming away with a huge 3-2 victory.

16 minutes in, Mendham scored to take a 1-0 lead.  However, Matt Brusco would answer back in the 30th minute to tie the game 1-1 on a penalty kick.  Tied 1-1 at the half, Matt Brusco would score again in the 56th minute for the 2-1 advantage from a crisp pass in transition from Aidan Abere.  However, 9 minutes later, Mendham would tie the game 2-2 on a rocket from the top of the box and finally take a 3-2 lead with just a minute left to play in the game, giving Mendham a big home victory.  Delbarton wraps up a busy schedule on Wednesday against Randolph before earning 6 days of rest before the Morris County Tournament opens.  This completes a stretch of games that saw the Green Wave play 6 games in 13 days.
