On Saturday, April 22, Delbarton's Varsity Baseball team traveled to North Brunswick to take on Voorhees in the Annual Autism Awareness Challenge and came home with a 1-0 win.
Each year, the Autism Awareness Challenge brings together 40 of the state's top programs to play each other, but the competition is secondary. The true purpose of the event is to spread awareness about autism and raise money for those who are affected by it. And, for the second year in a row, Delbarton was the top money-raiser for the weekend!
The game itself was also very special to the Delbarton family. Rami El Taki threw out the ceremonial first pitch to his older brother, Amir (Sr, Yale), before Amir started the game on the mound for the Green Wave.
Delbarton's lone run of the game came in the 4th inning. Kevin Hager (Sr, Cornell) started the inning by reaching first base on a Voorhees error. Jack Harley (Jr, Rice) then reached base on a fielder's choice before getting to second base on a failed pick-off attempt. Rob Russo (Sr, Villanova) drove Harley home with a line-drive base hit to left field.
That was all the run support Amir needed. Over the course of the first 5 innings, he no-hit the Vikings while striking out 6. Aidan Dill (Jr, Seton Hall) then picked up the save with 3 strikeouts and no hits in the final 2 innings. Together, El Taki and Dill combined for the Green Wave's second shutout and the first no-hitter of the year to improve the team's overall record to 9-2.
Congratulations to the team on the win, and thank you to all who donated to such a wonderful cause.
