The Green Wave Baseball team eliminated Bergen Catholic from the NJSIAA Non Public Tournament on Friday, May 30, defeating the Crusaders 7-4.
Delbarton trailed 3-0 early, but Delbarton answered back with 2 runs in the bottom of the inning for a 3-2 deficit.Â
Lorenzo Maselli hit an RBI double driving in
Matt Tafuri, followed by an RBI ground out by
Finnian O'Loughlin to bring the score to 3-2 Bergen Catholic. The Crusader would add another run in the top of th 5th thanks to an RBI single, bringing the score to 4-2. With only 2 innings left and 2 runs to make up, the team rallied behind the arm of
Steven Pannullo, who had entered the game in relief with no outs and two men on. He would get two big outs, before loading the bases, but got out of the jam with a big strikeout to keep the score at 4-2.
The bottom of the 5th was when Delbarton took over, starting with a single by Maselli.Â
Miles Handy reached on an error, moving O'Loughlin to third.Â
Ted Masino would reach on a catcher's interference to load the bases and DH
AJ Saccento had a huge single to left, scoring Maselli and keeping the bases loaded. Now trailing 4-3,
MJ Wright stepped up to the plate and ripped a line drive to center, driving in Handy and Masino for the 5-4 lead. Delbarton would add 2 more in the bottom of the 6th as Maselli singled once again, followed by a big RBI triple by O'Loughlin.Â
Miles Handy then singled in another run for the 7-4 lead. Pannullo would take care of the rest, setting down the Crusaders in order in the top of the 7th for a big 7-4 comeback victory.
O'Loughlin started the game throwing 3 innings with 3 runs and 2 strikeouts.Â
Curt Friedrich kept Bergen Catholic off the board with an inning of work and Pannulllo closed it out, throwing three innings, allowing just one hit and no walks, striking out 4.
Maselli went 3-4 with an RBI and 2 runs scored.Â
Miles Handy had 2 hits along with O'Loughlin. Â
Up next for Delbarton is a rematch with #1 seed Don Bosco on Wednesday, June 4 at 4pm in Ramsey.
