The Green Wave Baseball team dropped a heartbreaking 8-7 final on Friday to Mt. Olive in the Morris County Tournament final at Montville High School.
Mount Olive went up 1-0 in the top of the first, but the Green Wave countered in a big way, scoring 5 runs off starter Robert Hubbard, leading 5-1 after the first. The inning was highlighted by back-to-back RBI triples by
Sal Garcia and Finn O'Loughlin.
Mount Olive clawed back in the second inning, pulling within 2 runs, making it a 5-3 Delbarton lead. That lead would stick until the 4th when Mount Olive took the lead, scoring four runs in the inning, thanks to a three-run home run to right that put them up 7-5.
The Green Wave had plenty of fight left in them, and reliever
John Fedun would come up big for Delbarton with 2 innings pitched, allowing just one run with 3 strikeouts. In the bottom of the 6th, Delbarton would tie the score up thanks to a Matt Tafuri single, followed by a fielders choice and error that would plate Tafuri. With the bases loaded,
Danny Haggard was hit by a pitch, plating Finn O'Loughlin for the tying run. Â
Ted Masino would pitch 2 innings in relief, allowing a single run with 5 strikeouts, but Mt. Olive would score from first thanks to an RBI double making it an 8-7 game. In the bottom of the 7th, a walk and a Matt Tafuri single would put runners on the corners with no outs. But a strikeout followed by a line out double play ended the threat and the game.
Delbarton now turns its attention to the Non Public A tournament starting next week.
