Delbarton Varsity Baseball Team took another step towards defending its title in Morris County over the weekend, defeating Jefferson in the first round on Friday and Mendham in the quarterfinal round on Saturday.
Against Jefferson, Delbarton scored runs in the first, fourth, and sixth inning to cruise to an 8-1 win. On the day, Griffen Mills (Sr, Northwestern) provided most of the offense for the Green Wave going 2 for 3 at the plate, with a walk, an RBI, and 3 runs scored. Freshman lefty AJ Saccento (Fr, Duke) threw a complete game to earn the win, scattering 4 hits, walking 1, and striking out 6 over the course of the seven innings.
The complete game performance left Coach Shatel with plenty of pitching options when the team took on Mendham less than 24 hours later. However, Aidan Dill (Sr, Seton Hall) did not need much help on the mound. The lefty went 6 ? innings, giving up 1 run on 4 hits while striking out 3. Ryan Holman (So) entered the game and induced a pop-out for the second out of the inning before closing the game with a strikeout. On the offensive side of the plate, the Green Wave saw 8 of its 9 batters get a hit. Zach McBride (Sr, Trinity), Sal Garcia (Fr, Duke), Kevin Hager (Sr, Cornell), and Mills each had a multi-hit game, while Rob Russo (Sr, Villanova) blasted his second home run of the season.
The team returns to action this week with a home game against Montville (Monday) and a road game at Mt. Olive (Wednesday) before taking on Chatham Saturday in the MCT semifinal at Fleury Field. First pitch slated for 3:00pm.
