The Slalom State Championships dawned with yet another splendid day, featuring clear blue skies and warmer temperatures that posed a challenge for ski racing. However, with the application of salt to firm up the snow, we geared up for the course inspection. Fresh off a remarkable performance in the GS States the previous day, our boys were primed and focused with another title in their grasp. They eagerly awaited the opening of the course and with inspection complete, they gathered at the top for their traditional prayer led by senior captain
Louis Friedrich, invoking the blessings of Our Lady of Victory. With prayers said, they lined up at the starting gate, one by one launching into their runs. Despite their best efforts, we found ourselves trailing by just under 2 seconds after the first run, setting the stage for a nail-biting second round.
As the course was reset for the final runs, emotions ran high. However, midway through the course, a fall resulted in a Did Not Finish (DNF), intensifying the atmosphere as the race took an unexpected turn. With both teams' top racers encountering setbacks, the competition became more unpredictable. Our boys pushed harder, striving to make up for lost ground, but a subsequent DNF put the title out of reach for Delbarton. Despite solid efforts from the last two racers, it wasn't enough to secure the Slalom title. Yet, in the face of adversity, the team displayed resilience and determination, a testament to their unwavering spirit throughout the season.
