Playing their fourth game in six days, the Varsity Baseball team needed extra innings to defeat Mendham 7-6 on Tuesday afternoon. The game was back and forth throughout. The Minutemen jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the first and the Green Wave were forced to play catch up until the 7th inning.
Trailing 5-6 and facing their last chance to score, Sal Garcia (So, Duke) led off the inning by being hit by a pitch, then stole second base. Jack Harley's (Sr, Virginia Tech) flyball to right allowed Garcia to advanced to third and score on an misplayed ball by the Mendham infield. After a scoreless bottom of the 7th, Miles Handy (Jr) led off by being hit by a pitch. A walk to MJ Wright and a bunt base hit by Louis Friedrich advanced Handy to third where Aidan Dill was able to drive him in with a single to right giving the Green Wave the 7-6. AJ Saccento (So, Duke) then entered in the bottom of the 8th to close out the win.
The win was a true team effort with Handy, Wright, and Friedrich combining for 5 hits, 2 runs, and 2 RBI. On the mound, Rhys Shannon (Sr, Tufts), Jake Bell (Sr), Christian Zebrowski (Sr, Middlebury), and Saccento combined to push Delbarton's record 6-1, with Zebrowski getting the win, and Saccento picking up the save.
There is no let up in the schedule for Coach Shatel's team. After a day of to practice on Thursday, and a rain out scheduled vs. Roxbury, Delbarton faces Chatham, Bergen Catholic, and Holy Spirit in consecutive days.
