Delbarton football delivered one of its most complete performances of the season on Saturday, rolling past Pope John, 38–15, on the road to even its record at 3–3 heading into the bye week.
Quarterback Gavin Gilardi was perfect through the air, completing all 15 of his 15 pass attempts for 162 yards and three touchdowns on a flawless afternoon. The Green Wave offense struck early as Gilardi connected with his top receiver Grant Van Raaphorst for a 39-yard touchdown down the sideline to make it 7–0 in the first quarter.
In the second, Gilardi found Matt Tafuri on a 13-yard pass for a touchdown, and Kobe Irby-Mason added a 20-yard rushing score to push the lead to 21–0 at halftime after the defense caused a fumble recovery.
Delbarton kept rolling after the break as Gilardi and Tafuri connected again for a 9-yard touchdown to make it 28–0 before Pope John got on the board late in the third. Jayden Schmalz then broke free for a spectacular 67-yard touchdown run, and Hudson Yee nailed a 37-yard field goal to extend the advantage to 38–7. Pope John added a late touchdown and two-point conversion for the 38–15 final.
Irby-Mason led the ground game with 63 rushing yards, while Tafuri added 42 yards on the ground. In the passing game, Van Raaphorst led all receivers with 51 yards, followed by Austin Kiely (38), Tafuri (36), Girardo Yoo (35), and Jack Castellano, who made a key 13-yard grab to extend a drive late in the game.
Delbarton's defense was relentless, recording four sacks and a fumble recovery, consistently getting to the quarterback and setting the tone up front.
With the win, the Green Wave head into their bye week on a high note before returning to action on October 18 on the road against Bergen Catholic in the team's final regular season road game.
