Delbarton Football turned Homecoming Saturday into a big-play showcase, using three forced turnovers, a dominant rushing attack and a special teams touchdown to race past St. Joseph High School of Metuchen, 54-24.
The Green Wave wasted little time taking control.
Vince Achilarre intercepted a St. Joseph pass on the Falcons' opening possession, immediately giving the Delbarton offense a short field. Quarterback Jayden Schmalz capitalized, connecting with Jack Castellano for a 22-yard touchdown and an early 7-0 lead.
After a St. Joseph field goal cut the advantage to 7-3, Delbarton went to work on the ground. Schmalz broke off three big runs on the ensuing drive before DJ Benfatti finished it with a three-yard touchdown run to make it 14-3.
The defense quickly handed the ball right back to the offense. Joe DeSilva intercepted a pass and returned it down the sideline to the St. Joseph 15-yard line. On the next play, Benfatti covered the remaining 15 yards for his second touchdown of the quarter, giving Delbarton a 21-3 advantage after one.
The Green Wave continued to pour it on early in the second.
Following a St. Joseph three-and-out, Dre Roberson broke free for a 32-yard run that set up Schmalz's 20-yard rushing touchdown, stretching the lead to 27-3.
The Falcons responded with a 65-yard touchdown reception, but any potential momentum swing was short-lived.
Jaxon Edwards stepped in front of a St. Joseph pass and raced 57 yards for a pick-six, pushing the Delbarton lead to 35-10.
Special teams then joined the scoring. On the Falcons' next possession, Loghan Romain blocked a punt and DaSilva scooped it up and returned it for a touchdown. The score gave DeSilva his second game-changing play of the half and sent Delbarton into halftime with a commanding 42-10 lead.
Benfatti completed his hat trick in the third quarter, scoring from 13 yards out for his third rushing touchdown of the afternoon and a 49-10 advantage.
St. Joseph answered with a four-yard touchdown reception, but Delbarton remained firmly in control with a running clock in effect during the second half.
Roberson put the finishing touch on the Green Wave's offensive performance in the fourth quarter, breaking free for a 32-yard touchdown run. The Falcons added a 27-yard touchdown reception late, but Delbarton's Homecoming celebration was already well underway as the Green Wave closed out the 54-24 victory.
Delbarton finished with 226 rushing yards, led by a balanced three-man attack. Roberson rushed for 86 yards on seven carries, Benfatti added 81 yards on eight carries, and Schmalz finished with 59 yards on seven attempts in his first home start as the Green Wave quarterback. The trio combined for five rushing touchdowns, with Benfatti leading the way with three.
Through the air, Schmalz and the Green Wave totaled 48 yards, highlighted by the 22-yard touchdown connection with Castellano to open the scoring.
The defense and special teams proved just as dangerous. Delbarton forced three turnovers, including interceptions by Achilarre, DeSilva and Edwards, with Edwards taking his back 57 yards for a touchdown. Romain's blocked punt and DaSilva's ensuing touchdown return gave the Green Wave two non-offensive scores on the afternoon.
From the opening interception to the final whistle, Delbarton controlled all three phases to deliver a 54-point performance in front of the Homecoming crowd.
