Delbarton Wrestling opened its season on one of the sport's biggest stages, turning in a statement performance at the Ironman Invitational Friday and Saturday at Walsh Jesuit High School in Ohio.
Widely regarded as one of the toughest tournaments in the country, the Ironman brought together an elite field of nationally ranked programs and individuals, giving the Green Wave an immediate test to begin the year, especially with the earlier than normal start date. Delbarton answered the challenge, finishing third overall with 122 team points.
The weekend was highlighted by two finalists, led by a championship run from senior Penn State commit Jayden James (165 lbs). James capped off a memorable tournament by defeating Melvin Miller of Bishop McCort (PA) in the finals, earning an 8–5 sudden-victory win. Miller entered the event ranked No. 1 nationally at 165 pounds, but James stayed composed after trailing 4-0 early, battled back to take a 5-4 lead before heading to overtime 5-5. James would score a sudden victory take down and secure the title.
At 190 pounds, CJ Betz put together an outstanding tournament of his own. Betz advanced to the finals after a gritty 4–2 decision over the top seed in the semifinals, showcasing his ability to compete with the best in the country. He ultimately finished as the runner-up, dropping a 14–6 major decision in the final, but his weekend performance was a strong early-season statement.
Delbarton also saw strong showings from Cameron Sontz (120 lbs) and Gabe Logan (175 lbs), both of whom reached the semifinals before bouncing back through the consolation rounds. Each wrestler earned a fourth-place finish after tough losses in the third-place matches, adding valuable points against elite competition, especially for Logan, who hasn't wrestled for the Green Wave since his freshman season due to injury last year.
For a first tournament of the season, Delbarton's performance at Ironman reflected both the program's depth and its ability to compete at the highest national level for Coach Stoll. The Green Wave return home battle-tested and ready to build on a strong start as the season continues.
