Delbarton Walks off With a 9-8 Win Over Poly Prep

Scott Faytok, NJ Advanced Media
On a rainy Saturday afternoon at Fleury Field, Delbarton Baseball walked off with a 9-8 win over Poly Prep.

The game came down to the wire on Saturday, as Miles Handy delivered a fielder's choice walk-off hit to secure the victory for the Green Wave.

Delbarton got on the board early, as Miles Handy reached on an error, scoring Sal Garcia.  After a Lorenzo Maselli single, Finnian O'Loughlin would rip a double to center, scoring Handy and Maselli for a 3-0 lead after one.  Poly Prep would put pressure on in the top of the third, putting runs on first and third with one outs, but pitcher Kyle McBride would get a big strikeout and a fly out to center field to secure the 3-0 lead.  Poly Prep would strike in the 4th however, as a Brandon Kim error would score one, followed by an RBI groundout to cut the lead to 3-2.  The Green Wave would grab a big lead in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases for Miles Handy.  Miles would hit a ground ball to short, but an error would lead to two runs scoring for a 5-2 lead.  A Maselli triple to center scored two more and another error at shortstop would give Delbarton an 8-2 lead in the fourth.

Poly Prep added one in the top of the 5th on an error for the 8-3 score. The top of the 6th saw Poly Prep tying the game off Brady Smith, in relief for McBride.  Three walks would load the bases with one out, and a fourth walk cut the score to 8-4.  John Fedun would come into the game in relief, allowing a single to right, making it 8-5.  Poly Prep followed with back to back singles, tying the game 8-8 with one out.  Wesley Gabriel was brought in for Fedun and got two big outs to keep the score tied, stranding runners at first and second.

Delbarton did not score in the 6th and Gabriel kept Poly Prep off the board in the 7th, allowing Delbarton a chance to walk off in the bottom of the inning.  A Matthew Tafuri one-out walk started the rally, followed by a Danny Haggard single, moving Tafuri to third base.  Sal Garcia was intentionally walked to load the bases in hopes of a double play.  However, Miles Handy would ground into a fielder's choice to shortstop and the speedy Tafuri raced home with the winning run!

Delbarton moves to 3-1 on the season with games against Morris Knolls, Donovan Catholic and Governor Livingston this week!
