Delbarton Football Clinches 2023 United White Division Title

The Green Wave earned a United White Division title on Saturday, playing before a packed crowd at Regan Stadium as part of Homecoming 2023 and defeating DePaul Catholic 28-0.  This was Delbarton's sixth straight win, while DePaul drops to 3-5.

Delbarton opened the game in a big way, with an opening drive that was capped off by a Ryan Trafford '24 17-yard run on the opening drive.  A forced punt by the Green Wave defense set up another successful drive, as Christian Zebrowski '24 used his arm to set up Delbarton for another scoring drive.  Trafford would once again find then end zone, finding a hole on the left side and hitting his stride down the left sideline for a 37-yard touchdown run, just 10 minutes into the first quarter.  Trafford's day would come to an end in the second quarter, but still managed to finish the game with 99 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns.

Philip Folmar '25 also played a big part in the Green Wave's win on Saturday, rushing 14 times for 44 yards out of the wildcat formation, punching in a 1-yard touchdown in the third quarter for the 21-0 lead.  Taking over for Trafford, Brock Dandridge '25 had himself quite the afternoon, rushing for a game-high 111 yards, punctuating the afternoon by taking a 46-yard touchdown to the house, setting off a celebration on the field and in the stands!  "It was huge because all season I've been waiting for my opportunity," Dandridge said. "I've been ready and once he (Trafford) went down, I knew I had to step up and I had to trust my line, I had to trust myself and we got the job done."

While Coach Chi's offense has been very successful this season running the ball and scoring points, it has been the feisty defense, led by Coach Matt Leotti that has fueled this Delbarton team this year.  Delbarton has only allowed 66 points all season, with opponents scoring just 8.3 points per game.  "It's special. We haven't given up a point since Game 3 with our starting defense," Delbarton coach Brian Bowers said. "It's pretty special. We knew we were going to have a really good group. They've come together; they play well together. It's complementary football. Our defensive staff does an amazing job preparing them every week.  They're savages. They really play well together."

Stepping up on defense Saturday was Will McGinty '24 who had a big interception, Kyle Checchio '25 and Connor Martin '24 with 2 sacks and two tackles for a loss, and senior captain Dallas Hurley '24, who had multiple deflected passes and a big interception in the end zone to keep the Spartans off the board.  John Riley '24 and Tyler Jackson '25 combined to have 2 tackles for loss to go with Martin's two as well.  "I think we have a lot of experience. This year especially, we have a lot of faith in each other," Hurley said. "We got a lot of faith in the coaching staff and definitely have a lot of faith in the offense to go out and put some points on the board. I know for a fact that they have some faith in us to pitch a shutout like today."

With the division title in hand, the Green Wave now begin preparation for a marquee matchup in the final regular season game of the season against St. Joe's Regional on Saturday.  The Green Knights come into the game with two losses, but are currently the #2 ranked team in the state.  A Delbarton victory could give the Green Wave the #2 seed in the Non-Public Tournament beginning in November.
