Under the leadership of first-year coach, John Majano-Lopez, the Delbarton Rugby team has hit the ground running this spring. In a sport that only has three official varsity teams from New Jersey, the Green Wave have played teams from three different states and one foreign country, battling to an official record of 1-2.
The team opened the season with Delbarton traveling to Fordham Prep. According to Coach Majano-Lopez, it was the strongest team that the Rams have had in years, and the Green Wave won the match 7-0 on a try scored by substitute Brayden Karpinksi, (Jr.) and a conversion by Josh Hepplewhite (Sr., Wake Forrest). For the contest, Jack DelGrande (So.) was named "Man of the Match." The team then scrimmaged Don Bosco's first-year team and they won handily.
The following two matches were difficult losses to Bergen Catholic and Fairfield Prep. In what proved to be one of the most physical and punishing matches in recent memory the Green Wave lost 17-14 to the Crusaders, despite the outstanding play of Man of the Match, Joal Saxon (Sr, Georgetown.). The team struggled to rebound four days later and was shut out 38-0 by Fairfield.
A week later Delbarton hosted St. Mary's from Toronto, Canada, for the first time since 2017. After finding themselves down 16-0 at the half, James Hadzima (So.) led the Green Wave to storm back with 17 unanswered points to win 17-16. Two days later the team host hosted Bishop Hendricken of RI, but the game was called because of lighting.
The Green Wave have one more out-of-state match this weekend when they travel to Boston College High School, before finishing up the season against in-state powers St. Augustine and Christian Brothers Academy.
