Athletes of Delbarton: Ryan Carey '22

Ryan Carey '22 is a two-sport athlete at Delbarton, wrapping up his final days as a student, counting down the days until he takes that final leap into the senior garden fountain.  In the fall, he'll be attending the University of Richmond in the Robins School of Business.  Until then, Carey is competing against some of the top programs in the country as the captain of the Delbarton Rugby program.

Carey began his Delbarton journey as a freshman in 2018.  When asked about why he chose Delbarton, the answer was simple:

"I chose Delbarton because of the people.  Any student or alumnus I've ever talked to has always remarked on having such a phenomenal high school experience and that really drew me towards the school. Also, Delbarton has an amazing campus!"

Ryan spends most of his time at school either in the classroom, in the weight room, on the field, or enjoying the cafeteria, and everything in between.  Away from school, which Carey says doesn't happen often, he enjoys cooking, skiing and mountain biking.

Outside of rugby, Ryan is a member of the Delbarton football team, and a leader of the Covenant House Sleep Out, a leader of the Investment Club and also a member of the fitness and culinary clubs.  "Delbarton has taught me how to stay on top of my work and succeed academically while also making sure I Have time to spend with family and friends," says Ryan.  In the spring, Ryan turns his attention to rugby, a sport he wasn't all that familiar with until a few short years ago.  "Quinn Zebrowski '21 and Pat Ryan '21 were two football guys I had talked to a lot during the 2019 season and they convinced me to come out for the team in the spring," says Carey.  "Although that season was cut short due to COVID, I tried out for the team the next year and had a great time playing. That year, we went undefeated and were state champions. As a football guy, I love the hitting and the teamwork involved in the sport. Also, I get to score points, which is a lot of fun!"

Ryan has been a leader for the team this season, sitting at 3-4 with two games remaining in the season against CBA and St. Augustine. "Coach Linfante has taught me how to be a leader of others."  During games, if things aren't going our way, there's a decision to make as a captain to either build people up, stay positive, and keep grinding, or to blow off some steam by bringing others down. The first answer is the obvious one and Coach Linfante has taught me how to do this the right way."
