The Green Wave traveled to Lyndhurst Friday afternoon to take on the Bergen Catholic Crusaders in a game that pitted the #2 and #3 ranked teams in the state. It was a defensive battle with timely hitting and pitching that ended in a 3-2 win for Coach Shatel's team.
The first run of the game was scored in 1st first inning when Jack Harley doubled to left field and drove in Griffin Milles who had singled in the first at-bat of the game. Bergen Catholic rescinded by tying the game up 1-1 in the bottom of the inning. Two innings later in the top of the 3rd, Harley came through again. After Kevin Harger singled to right, Harley crushed a 1-0 pitch over the centerfielder's head for an inside-the-park homerun to make it 3-1. The Crusaders were able to get 1 run back in the bottom of the 3rd, but that was all they could get on the pitching duo of freshman AJ Saccento and Aidan Dill.Â
For the second time this spring, the two lefties combined to take down a top 5 team. Saccento started the game and went 5 innings giving up 4 hits, walking 5, and striking out 6. Dill cruised through the 6th inning putting the Crusaders down 1-2-3. In the 7th, he gave up consecutive 2-out singles, before getting Bergen Catholic's cleanup hitter to ground out to Hager and secure the win.
It was the Delbarton's 5th straight road win which pushed their record to 11-3. This week is another busy week with home games against Glenn Rock (Monday) and Roxbury (Wednesday) before the Green Wave open the Morris County Tournament at home (Friday) against the winner of the game between Morristown and Jefferson. Delbarton is the defending champion and #1 seed.
