For the 18th time in program history, and the first time since 2019, the Green Wave Lacrosse program are Morris County Tournament Champions. Riding a 6-0 first half lead, the Green Wave played relentless defense and scored timely goals, defeating #2 seed Mountain Lakes at Mt. Olive High School on Tuesday night, May 9.
Tournament MVP
Willie Doyle was the star of the night, tying a career high with four goals in the victory. "I have to give a shout out to coach Coffey. All week I kept going low-to-low, then high-to-high," Doyle said. "He said, 'Just act like you're shooting low and rip it high.' I did; it worked out well for me today." The Doyle brothers truly shined on offense in the game, with Willie's 4 goals and one assist while Gray had a goal and and assist in the first half.
TJ Coffey ripped two goals in the game, while
Spencer Shea opened the scoring in the first and
Vincent Ferrara finished off the scoring late in the fourth quarter. Delbarton controlled play for much of the game, thanks to
Nick Faccone, who was able to win 5 of 9 face offs, including a big win after Mountain Lakes scored its second goal.
While the offense put up 9 goals in the victory, the Green Wave defense was the star of the show, holding Mountain Lakes to just 2 goals on six shots.
Corbin Lukanski,
Julian Radossich,
Finn Leamy and
Jake Melchionni anchored a relentless Delbarton defense, causing turnovers, preventing scoring attempts, and keeping Lakes off the board while playing a man down. "I feel like today we knew what we were gonna see out of Mountain Lakes," Lukanski said. "That really heightened us to take the hands more, play more physical on ground balls. We weren't scared to play them and we knew what was coming. That made us a better team."
Aidan Troy was perfect in net for Delbarton, making 4 first-half saves while not allowing a goal.
Charlie Medd played the second half and had two big saves, while allowing just two goals.
Delbarton has a day to prepare before a big matchup with #2 Seton Hall Prep on Thursday, May 11 at Cocoziello Field. Game time set for 4:30pm.
