The highly anticipated home matchup against Seton Hall Prep lived up to the hype, as four quarters weren't enough as Seton Hall Prep squeaked by the Green Wave 11-10 in overtime on Thursday, May 11.
The Pirates jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first quarter as Delbarton's offense struggled to find an open lane to shoot. However, the momentum shifted dramatically in the second quarter, as senior
Jake Melchionni '23 (Villanova) jump started the Delbarton offense with a great defensive play, taking it to the house for the Green Wave's first goal.Â
Sean Diczok '23 (Loomis Chaffee) would follow up with his first of the game and
Jack Amato '24 would tie the game up at 9:10 in the second with his first goal of the game. The teams would trade goals as SHP took a 4-3 lead, but
Ryan Trafford '23 (Navy) would win the ensuing face off and take it all the way for the score. The Pirates did not back down, scoring two goals before the end of the half, including a big goal with 18 seconds left to give them a 6-4 halftime lead.
The second half saw a goalie change as
Charlie Medd '23 (Williams) took over for
Aidan Troy '23 (Penn). The Pirates would build another 3-goal lead but Delbarton would answer back with
Vincent Ferrara scoring to make it a 7-5 deficit. After SHP made it 8-5, Delbarton began to mount a big comeback. Long stick
Will Pedicano '25 scored to make it 8-6 and
Willie Doyle '24 ripped his first goal with 34.9 seconds left in the third to make it 8-7. Delbarton would open the fourth quater with three straight goals, two by T.J. Coffey '23 (Quinnapiac) and
Jack Sartorius '24 gave Delbarton its first lead with a goal to make it 9-8. At 6:31, the Pirates would cut the lead to 10-9 and with 1:07 left would tie the game 10-10. A final Delbarton opportunity in front of the net was saved by Pirates goalie Adam Angel and the game would go into overtime.
Delbarton would win the opening face off, but couldn't get one past Angel. With 2:08 left on the clock in the first overtime, Tyler Juhlin would score to give Seton Hall Prep the 11-10 victory. In the loss, Medd and Troy combined for 4 big saves, while Trafford and
Nick Faccone '23 (Lafayette) combined to go 16/23 on face offs, a big reason why the Green Wave were able to mount a comeback in the third and fourth quaters. Â
The Green Wave turn their attention to a matchup with out of state opponent Iona Prep on Saturday, May 13 at 2:30pm from St. Joseph's of Montvale. Admission is $7 adults, $5 for children and benefits People to People of Nanuet, NY and the Father English Food Pantry of Paterson, NJ.
