For the fourth straight season (minus 2020s canceled season), the Green Wave earned a spot in the county tournament final, and once again, came out victorious, defeating West Morris 9-1 to capture the county crown.
Unlike the last 3 wins, the Green Wave scored early and often, putting up 9 runs in the victory, while having only scored 7 runs in the past 3 championship games combined. The Green Wave scored first in the second inning as
Matt Dahl '23 drove in
Sal Garcia '26 who had tripled in his at bat. Garcia slid in just under the tag of the catcher for a 1-0 lead. Delbarton would add to the lead in the third as
Jack Harley '24's grounder to second resulted in an errant throw, allowing the runner at second to score for a 2-0 lead.Â
Matt Dahl would get his second RBI of the evening, driving in Harley with a base hit up the middle for the 3-0 lead.Â
Aiden Dill '24 would get into some trouble in the top of the 4th, but struck out Gavin Drown to keep the Wolfpack off the board.Â
The Green Wave responded with additional run support in the bottom of the 4th as
Griffin Mills '23 would triple to the right center wall and
Aiden Dill helped himself with an RBI single, driving in Mills for a 4-0 lead.Â
Jack Harley would open the bottom of the 5th with a walk and
Sal Garcia would make it 6-0 Green Wave with his second home run of the season, a blast down the left field line for a 6-0 Delbarton lead. The Wolfpack would get on the board in the 6th inning to make it 6-1 as
AJ Saccento '26 took over for Dill after 5 innings of work. West Morris would load the bases again, but Saccento would pain the corner on a 2-2 count, stranding three. Delbarton would once again respond. Mills would single to left, and move to second on a sac bunt by Dill.Â
Kevin Hager '23 would get hit by a pitch and
Jack Harley would rip a single to left, scoring Mills and moving Hager to third.Â
Sal Garcia would get another RBI driving in Hager from 3rd for the 8-1 lead and Dahl would end the scoring as he ripped a single to left for the 9-1 lead. Saccento would close the door on the championship in the top of the 7th for the county victory.
Aiden Dill,
Griffin Mills,
Sal Garcia and
Matt Dahl each had two hits in the victory, while
Jack Harley also had a hit and RBI. Dill threw 5 innings, allowing 1 hit, 0 runs, striking out 8, while Saccento went 2 innings, allowing 2 hits, 1 run and 2 strikeouts.
In Delbarton's four straight county titles dating back to 2019, the starting pitching for Delbarton has thrown a total of 28 innings, allowing just 7 hits, 2 runs, while striking out 47.Â
Congrats to coach Shatel and the team on another county championship and best of luck as you begin your quest for a state title.
