Delbarton Lacrosse Wins Triple Overtime Thriller For Non Public A Title

Few argue that Saturday's Non Public A Final against Seton Hall Prep is one of the greatest high school lacrosse games in New Jersey history.  In a game that saw everything from a 4-4 tie, to 8-4 deficit, to a historic comeback, there was only one way this game could end, and that was a triple overtime game winner.  On Saturday, June 10, Nick Faccone scored one of the biggest goals in School history, capping off a 10-9 victory and a Non Public A title for the Green Wave.

Hours earlier, the game kicked off with Delbarton taking an early 3-2 lead after one quarter.  Sean Diczok opened the scoring ripping a shot from the left side on the opening possession for the 1-0 lead.  SHP responded as expected, scoring 2 goals in under a minute for the 2-1 lead.  However, Luke Carrillo would tie the game on a beautiful shot while attacking the goal, and Willie Doyle converted off a beautiful pass from Spencer Shea for the 3-2 first quarter lead.  The Pirates once again responded, tying the game at 3-3, but Sean Diczok scored his second of the game, giving Delbarton a 4-3 lead.  At 6:31 in the second, SHP tied the game at 4-4, a score that would stick as the teams went to the half tied at 4-4.

Delbarton's offense struggled in the third, while Seton Hall Prep attacked early and often, building an 8-4 lead over the Green Wave.  However, as our motto Succisa Virescit states, been cut down, we come back stronger, and come back stronger we did!  Willie Doyle scored his second of the game early in the fourth, ripping a top shelf goal to make it 8-5.  Gray Doyle netted his first of the game off a great feed from Luke Carrillo and Nick Faccone answered immediately after the Doyle goal, scoring off the faceoff, cutting the lead to one, 8-7.  The Pirates scored once more, making it 9-7 with only five minutes left to play.  Asher Testa would not let the season come to an end, scoring from the left side with 1:12 left in the game.  Delbarton gained possession and playing a man-up, Willie Doyle found Asher Testa coming down the middle, putting his shot past Adam Angel for the game-tying goal with 2.5 seconds left in the game.

Both teams had long possessions in overtime, but neither team scored in the first overtime.  Charlie Medd made a huge save in the second overtime to keep Seton Hall Prep off the board.  Entering the third overtime, Nick Faccone stepped up to take one last faceoff.  Gaining possession on the run, Faccone raced by two defenders and put a perfectly placed shot passed Angel for the game winning goal, giving Delbarton its 18th Non Public title. "It's unreal. It's the stuff you dream about as a kid," Faccone said. "Last night I was struggling to go to sleep , thinking about what if it goes into overtime like it did the last game. Could I be the guy to step up?"

Faccone and Ryan Trafford finished the game 17 of 25 on faceoffs, with Faccone winning 11 of 14, giving Delbarton a clear advantage in possessions.  Delbarton finished with four players with two goals each and Aidan Troy made 5 saves in the game before Charlie Medd finished off the fourth and overtimes with one goal allowed and three big saves.
