Delbarton Wrestling showcased their dominance at the 2024 Powerade Wrestling Tournament, one of the nation's premier high school wrestling events, featuring elite programs and top-ranked wrestlers from across the country. The team's performance highlighted their depth and skill, with multiple podium finishes and two individual champions, further cementing their reputation as one of the top wrestling programs in the region. Competing against powerhouse programs like Lake Highland Prep and Bishop McCort, Delbarton's wrestlers rose to the occasion and delivered outstanding results.
At 114 pounds, Cameron Sontz led the charge, claiming the championship title with a gritty 4-2 decision over Easton Mull of Chestnut Ridge. Sontz's tactical wrestling and ability to control the pace of the match were key to his victory, as he showcased the poise and precision of a seasoned competitor, yet only in his second year. His championship marked a defining moment in the tournament for Delbarton, setting the tone for the team's success. Meanwhile, at 152 pounds, Jayden James followed suit, capturing the second individual title for Delbarton with a dominant 16-4 major decision against Zeno Moore of Lake Highland Prep. James' relentless offensive attacks and technical superiority left no doubt about his standing as one of the best wrestlers in the country.
Other notable performances included Alessio Perentin at 160 pounds and CJ Betz at 189 pounds, who both secured runner-up finishes in their respective weight classes. Perentin wrestled an incredibly tight final match but fell just short in a 4-2 decision against Melvin Miller of Bishop McCort. Similarly, Betz displayed tremendous strength and resilience throughout the tournament, earning a second-place finish after a hard-fought 4-0 loss to Robert Kucharczk of Lake Highland Prep. These runner-up finishes underscored the team's ability to compete at the highest level and consistently challenge for top honors.
Additionally, Delbarton saw strong contributions from wrestlers in other weight classes. Tommy Marchetti earned a 7th-place finish at 121 pounds, securing a victory by forfeit in his final match. At 139 pounds, Chase Quenault placed 6th, while Nick Schwartz added an 8th-place finish at 145 pounds. Earning 7th place as well was PJ Terranova, who won 5-2 in TB2 at 107 pounds. Each of these wrestlers contributed valuable team points and displayed the depth of talent within Delbarton's lineup, demonstrating that the program's strength goes well beyond its top performers.
Delbarton's collective success at the Powerade Wrestling Tournament reflects the team's rigorous preparation and high-caliber coaching. Facing off against nationally ranked opponents, the Green Wave stood their ground and delivered results that reaffirm their status as one of the country's elite wrestling programs. With these accomplishments, Delbarton has set a strong foundation for the remainder of the season, as the team aims to continue building on this momentum in their quest for state and national accolades.
