Delbarton Baseball Earns Two Weekend Victories

The Delbarton Green Wave baseball team emerged victorious in their weekend games against Pope John and Donovan Catholic, showcasing their tenacity and skill on the diamond. With two consecutive wins, the team stands at 5-1.

Friday, April 12 - Delbarton vs. Pope John

On Friday, April 12, Delbarton traveled to Sparta to take on Pope John in a game that had been relocated due to rain. The change in venue did not seem to faze the Green Wave, as they emerged victorious with a 5-2 win.

Starting pitcher Christian Zebrowski led Delbarton to a strong start, giving up just six hits and two runs (one earned) over five innings. Zebrowski also struck out four batters. AJ Saccento closed out the game with two clean innings, allowing only one walk and striking out six to secure the win.

Offensively, the Green Wave showed strong performances at the plate. Aiden Dill went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Jack Harley and Sal Garcia each contributed an RBI. Garcia also scored twice. Saccento added to his pitching success by finishing 2-for-4 with an RBI.  With the victory, head coach Bruce Shatel earned his 400th career coaching victory, adding to his already Hall of Fame coaching career.

Sunday, April 14 - Delbarton vs. Donovan Catholic

On Sunday, the Green Wave faced a tough Donovan Catholic team at Brookdale Community College. The game started with Delbarton falling behind 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning. However, Louis Friedrich quickly tied the game at 1-1 with a double in the top of the second.  Donovan Catholic responded with a three-run bottom of the second, extending their lead to 4-1. But Delbarton fought back in the top of the third inning. Sal Garcia drove in Aiden Dill with a hit to make it a 4-2 game. A Jack Harley walk and a two-run single by Miles Handy tied the game at 4-4.

Delbarton took the lead in the fourth inning when Garcia drove in Matt Tafuri, who had doubled earlier in the inning, for a 5-4 advantage. Donovan Catholic managed to tie the game at 5-5 after a scoring on an error during a pickoff attempt at first base.

The Green Wave broke the tie in the top of the seventh inning, courtesy of a monster home run by Jack Harley that put Delbarton ahead 6-5. AJ Saccento then drove in MJ Wright with a double to left field to extend Delbarton's lead to 7-5.  In relief of Aiden Dill, Ryan Holman threw two shutout innings, striking out three to secure the win for Delbarton. The team demonstrated their resilience and skill to complete the comeback and earn their second victory of the weekend.

Delbarton returns to the diamond on Tuesday to take on Mendham at 4pm in Mendham.
