Delbarton Baseball Wins 5th Straight County Championship

For the fourth consecutive year and the fifth straight tournament, the varsity baseball team won the Morris County Tournament, defeating Chatham High School 3-0 on Thursday night, May 16. For the third year in a row, Aiden Dill (Sr, Seton Hall) was named the tournament MVP.

In a low scoring game that featured two of the best pitchers in the county, the game went scoreless for the first 4 innings. The Green Wave were able to get at least one runner on base in each of the first four frames, but Chatham's defense refused to give up a run. It was not until the 5th inning that Delbarton's offense came through. Matt Tafuri (So) led off the inning with a walk, stole second base and advanced to third on an errant through. Sal Garcia (So, Duke) hit a fly ball to left field to score Tafuri for the 1-0 lead. The Green Wave added two more runs in the bottom of the 6th. AJ Saccento (So, Duke) and Miles Handy (Jr) led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Christian Zebrowski (Sr, Middlebury) moved Danny Haggard, who replaced Saccento as a pinch runner, and Handy over with a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt. Haggard then scored on a wild pitch before Tafuri drove in Handy with an RBI single.

On the mound, Dill seemed to get stronger as the game went on. After a 1-2-3 first inning, he allowed hits in the second and third, before setting down the next six Cougars he faced.  Coach Shatel turned to Christian Zebrowski (Sr. Middlebury) in the 7th. Entering the game with a 3-0 lead, Zebrowski struck out the side to seal the Morris County title for the Green Wave.

The win (0 runs, 2 hits, 0 walks, 7 strikeouts) capped off an impressive MCT career for the senior left-hander. Over three years and 53.2 innings, Dill went 9-0 and averaged 0.78 earned runs, 2.7 hits, 2.2 walks, and 6 strikeouts while throwing 3 complete games, and 6 shutouts in the Morris County Tournament. \

Coach Shatel's team will not have much time to celebrate the win because they host regional power Malvern Prep this Saturday before ending the regular season with games against Roxbury, Immaculata and a just announced matchup with Gloucester Catholic next week.
