In a commanding performance on Thursday, the Delbarton Varsity Green Wave shut out Bergen Catholic 6-0, securing their spot in the state sectional final against Don Bosco Prep this Saturday. The victory was powered by a stellar outing from pitcher AJ Saccento and a balanced offensive effort.
Saccento was nearly untouchable on the mound, allowing only one hit over seven innings. He struck out ten batters and walked just one, dominating Bergen Catholic from start to finish. His exceptional control and overpowering stuff set the tone for Delbarton's defense, which did not allow a single run.
The Green Wave's offense got rolling early. In the bottom of the first inning, Sal Garcia's sacrifice fly brought in the first run, putting Delbarton on the board. The team continued to capitalize on opportunities, with a big third inning that extended their lead.
Jack Harley and Aiden Dill sparked the third inning rally with triples. Garcia followed with an RBI single, and Saccento helped his own cause with a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt, each play resulting in a run. This flurry of activity put Delbarton firmly in control.
Garcia had a standout performance, driving in two runs and going 1-for-2 at the plate. Aidan Dill and Ryan Holman also contributed significantly, each collecting two hits. In total, Delbarton tallied eight hits, showcasing their depth and ability to produce runs from multiple spots in the lineup.
With this win, Delbarton advances to the state sectional final, where they will face off against Don Bosco Prep on Saturday at noon. The Green Wave will look to carry their momentum and strong play into Saturday's matchup, hoping to secure the sectional championship.
