Delbarton Lacrosse Captures Third Straight Morris County Tournament Title in 13-12 Thriller Over Chatham

In a back-and-forth battle between two of Morris County's top lacrosse powers, Delbarton edged Chatham 13-12 to capture its third consecutive Morris County Tournament championship on Tuesday, May 13, at Drew University.

The win marked Delbarton's 21st overall county title, and it didn't come easy. Chatham came out firing, jumping to a 3–0 lead in the opening quarter. But Chase Houser, making his return from injury, immediately made his presence felt by scoring back-to-back goals to pull Delbarton within one at 3–2. Chatham would add on another to lead 4–2 after one.

Delbarton responded in the second with a burst of momentum, sparked by a man-up goal from Alex Schobel to make it 4–3. Jared Baudin tied it at 4–4 before Brandon Fodor gave Delbarton its first lead at 5–4. Chatham answered with two late goals, including one with 49 seconds left to take a 6–5 advantage, but Gavin Romweber evened it up at 6–6 off a faceoff win by Kane Quenault.

The Green Wave kept the pressure on in the third. Asher Testa put Delbarton ahead 7–6, and Houser completed his hat trick to push the lead to 8–6. After Chatham trimmed it to 8–7, Peter Falk stepped up with his first of the night to restore a two-goal lead. The Cougars responded again at 9–8, but Falk scored his second with just seconds left in the third to give Delbarton a 10–8 lead heading into the final quarter.

Falk completed his hat trick early in the fourth, extending the lead to 11–8. Chatham responded with a man-up goal, but Fodor found the net again for his second of the night to make it 12–9. After another Chatham extra-man goal cut it to 12–10, Houser scored his fourth goal and game winning goal, off an assist from Phil Minardo — who had just won a big faceoff — to give Delbarton a 13–10 lead with 2:52 remaining.

Chatham refused to go away, scoring twice more on man-up opportunities — the final goal coming with just 14 seconds left to cut it to 13–12. But Minardo sealed the win by winning the ensuing faceoff, one of his five faceoff wins in the final 7:51, including all five of his fourth-quarter attempts.

The faceoff unit was the difference, with Delbarton winning 18 of 27 draws. Quenault went 7-for-9, Christian Troczynski 6-for-9, and Minardo 5-for-9 — all coming in the clutch down the stretch.  Tanner Shimko made four saves in goal for the Green Wave.

Peter Falk was named Tournament MVP, finishing the final with three goals and an assist and a tournament total of 20 points. Houser's four-goal return sparked the offense, while Fodor (2G, 1A), Schobel, Baudin, Romweber, and Testa all contributed in the scoring column.

With another MCT title in hand Delbarton now looks to finish the regular season schedule (3 games) before turning its attention to the NJSIAA Non Public tournament.
