Delbarton Football Earns Home Opener Victory, 35-6 Over Monsignor Farrell

The Green Wave opened their home schedule in a big way on Saturday, September 13, defeating Monsignor Farrell 35-6 in the Battle of the Bridge.

Delbarton and Monsignor Farrell battled in a very evenly matched first quarter, finishing 0-0.  On a late second quarter drive, quarterback Gavin Gilardi hit senior back Matthew Tafuri on a play action pass to the one yard line, where Kobe Irby-Mason would punch it in for the opening score of the game.  With the Lions driving, an Emmett Caughey sack would knock them out of quality field position and force a punt with just 16 seconds left in the half.  However, Gilardi would go for it all on first down, hitting receiver Grant Van Raaphorst perfectly in stride down the middle for another Green Wave touchdown, providing Delbarton a 14-0 halftime lead.

Opening the second half with the ball, Delbarton would score for a third consecutive drive, this time, Gilardi hit Tafuri in the flat from 30 yards out and he would do the rest, muscling his way to the end zone for a huge touchdown reception and a 21-0 third quarter lead.

The Lions got on the scoreboard on the first play from scrimmage of the fourth quarter, but the Green Wave special teams would block the extra point to keep it a 21-6 lead.  After a fake punt was successful earlier in the game by Monsignor Farrell, the Green Wave were ready on the ensuing kickoff, recovering the onside kick to prevent any further momentum by the Lions.

With a 21-6 lead and 7:18 left in the fourth, the Green Wave would look to extend it drive by going for it on 4th and 4 from the Lions 39.  Easton Wendorff would make a spectacular catch on a very high throw, hauling in the 18 yard pass from Gilardi for the first down.  This catch would lead to a Tafuri touchdown from 8 yards out for the 28-6 lead in the fourth.

On the Lions next possession, looking to get something going on offense late in the game, Delbarton defense made another huge 4th down stop, this time Luke McBride forced a qb strip sack and Devin Martin recovered for the Green Wave.  A few plays later, Austin Kiely would score his first rushing touchdown of the season from 30 yards out for the 35-6 lead and final score.

Gilardi finished with 133 yards in the air, with 2 touchdowns and an INT.  Kiely led all backs with 82 yards on the ground, while Irby-Mason had 59 along with Tafuri's 56 yards rushing.  Van Raaphorst had one big catch for 62 yards, while Tafuri had 45 yards receiving, going over 100 yards combined on Saturday.  Defensively, Devin Martin was all over the place, with five tackles and 2 fumble recoveries.  Emmett Caughey and Alex Fazekas registered sacks along with Luke McBride.  The secondary was spectacular all afternoon, keeping the Lions to only 121 yards in the air thanks to the play of Chaz Cusimano, Nick Stoll, Chase Houser and Matt O'Leary.

The Green Wave now turn their attention to the Super Football Conference schedule, starting with St. Peter's Prep on Saturday, September 20.  Kick off at 1pm during Homecoming 2025!
