Delbarton Hockey Repeats as Non Public State Champions

In a game that will be remembered as one of the most dramatic in program history, Delbarton staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Don Bosco Prep, 3–2, in overtime on Monday night at the Prudential Center, capturing the NJSIAA Non-Public State Championship and securing back-to-back titles for the Green Wave.

Trailing 2–0 late in the third period, Delbarton showed the resilience that defined its season, rallying with two power-play goals before senior Aidan Pasic delivered the championship moment in overtime.

The opening period was tightly contested, with both teams trading chances but neither able to break through. Goaltender Paul Insauto kept Delbarton within striking distance, turning aside several early opportunities as the teams headed to the first intermission scoreless.

Don Bosco Prep broke the deadlock right at the end of the second period when Chris Conklin scored on the power play with one second remaining, giving Bosco a 1–0 lead.

Bosco extended its advantage early in the third period when Jack Foye finished a two-on-none rush, putting Delbarton in a 2–0 hole with 10:41 remaining in regulation. It was the largest deficit the Green Wave had faced against an in-state opponent all season, and it came in the biggest game of the year.

But Delbarton refused to fold.

The comeback began as Don Bosco took a penalty after the 2-0 goal.  Delbarton immediately capitalized with a power-play goal from Sean O'Gwen, who buried a feed from Egor Andreev and Michael Pirot to cut the deficit to 2–1. Just minutes later, the Green Wave struck again with the man advantage. Matteo Conte bounded on a rebound off a blocked shot tying the game at 2–2 and sending the Delbarton crowd into a frenzy.

Delbarton finished the night converting two of its five power-play chances and generated sustained offensive pressure throughout the game, outshooting Don Bosco Prep 36–15.

In overtime, the moment belonged to Pasic.

Egor Andreev found Dean Zaro open for a one-timer which was blocked in front of the net, Aidan Pasic bounded on the rebound in front of the net, was able to set and fire a shot under the spralwing kepper, finding the back of the net to complete the comeback and secure the championship for the Green Wave.

"I couldn't even dream about this," Pasic said. "A goal like this means so much to not just me, my team, my family and everything like that. It's such a big moment for our school and for all the fans who showed out. It was honestly such a privilege and honor to score such a goal like that."

The overtime winner etched Pasic's name into program history. He became the first Delbarton player to score a state title-clinching overtime goal since Peter McMullen in 2011 and just the third player in program history to accomplish the feat. Only 17 players in New Jersey state history have scored an overtime goal to win a state championship.

Andreev played a pivotal role in the comeback effort, recording three assists on the night, including helpers on both third-period power-play goals and the overtime winner.  Andreev finishes his Delbarton career with 99 career points for the Green Wave.

Goaltender Paul Insauto made 13 saves to secure the victory behind a disciplined defensive effort that limited Bosco to just 15 shots on goal.

For Pasic, the championship moment served as a fitting finale to his Delbarton career.

"This whole journey this year was a battle," Pasic said. "Bosco is a heck of a team and they worked us up until the very end. Scoring that was the perfect end to my Delbarton career. Back-to-back conference champs, back-to-back Gordon Cup champs, and back-to-back state champs is such an honor."

With the victory, Delbarton caps another dominant season and adds another chapter to one of New Jersey's most storied high school hockey programs.
