Delbarton Baseball earned a hard fought victory in Cary yesterday with with a gritty, come-from-behind win.
Trailing 2-1 entering the late innings, the Green Wave showed patience and poise, scoring once in each of the fifth, sixth, and seventh to earn a 3-2 victory over Wakefield (NC) at the National High School Invitational.
After chipping away to make it 2-2, Delbarton found its breakthrough moment in the top of the seventh. Finnian O'Loughlin delivered the go-ahead RBI, driving in Sal Garcia to give the Green Wave their first lead of the afternoon at 3-2.
The comeback was set in motion an inning earlier when Ted Masino came through with a clutch RBI to tie the game, continuing a strong day at the plate and igniting the late surge.
Garcia wasn't done making an impact. After scoring the winning run, he capped the game with a standout defensive play on the final out, sealing the victory in dramatic fashion.
On the mound, Delbarton turned in a complete team effort. O'Loughlin got the start, allowing just one earned run over four innings while striking out five. Curt Friedrich was sharp in relief, tossing two scoreless innings to keep the Green Wave within striking distance, and Noah Morales shut the door in the seventh to earn the save.
At the plate, Matt Tafuri led the way with two hits, including a double, while Masino and O'Loughlin each delivered key RBI knocks. AJ Saccento and Lorenzo Maselli also crossed the plate as part of the three-run rally.
With the win, Delbarton improves to 1-2 on the trip and will look to carry the momentum into its final game of the tournament later today.
