Two Delbarton seniors concluded the indoor track and field season on a high note Tuesday night, traveling to New York City to compete in the prestigious Eastern States Championships. The meet brings together many of the top athletes from across the East Coast, making it one of the most selective and competitive postseason events of the winter season.
Senior standout Luke Eisenhardt represented the Green Wave in the 55-meter dash, delivering an impressive performance with a time of 6.74 seconds, just shy of qualifying for the semifinal round. Eisenhardt's strong showing capped a remarkable first season with the program, as he finishes the year ranked fourth on Delbarton's all-time list in the event.
Team captain Aidan Ponzio competed in three events during a full evening of competition. Ponzio advanced through the preliminary round of the 55-meter hurdles and narrowly missed qualifying for the finals after a solid semifinal performance. He later recorded an indoor personal best in the triple jump with a mark of 41 feet, 5.25 inches.
The highlight of Ponzio's night came in the long jump, where he qualified for the final and placed fifth overall against an elite field. His jump of 22 feet, 5.25 inches marked a massive personal best and moved him into second place all-time in Delbarton school history, trailing only Marcus Hickerson's mark set in 1987.
With the jump, Ponzio also qualified for the New Jersey Meet of Champions on Sunday, March 8, where he will have one more opportunity to chase the school record.
Congratulations to both seniors on outstanding performances representing Delbarton on one of the region's biggest stages.
