The Delbarton Track and Field team opened their season with two victories against NJAC United Division rivals in a tri-meet with Chatham and Mendham. The final scores were Delbarton over Chatham 80-60 and Delbarton over Mendham 103-33. The meet started fast with junior Hans Clovis securing crucial points in the 400m hurdles with a 3rd place against Chatham and a 1st against Mendham in 60.9 seconds.
In the 100m dash, senior Aidan Ponzio took first against Mendham in 11.7s with junior Giovanni Bushell close behind, taking 2nd in 11.8s. In the 1600m race, sophomore Matthew Heyer ran against some of the best distance runners in the county, taking a strong 3rd in 4:50 to Chatham, but 1st against Mendham. Juniors Matthew Fic and Ryan Leuenberger were 2nd and 3rd against Mendham. In the 400m dash, junior Joshua Akakpo breezed to a 1st place finish against both teams in 52 seconds. Sophomore Ryan Alessi impressed with a 2nd against Chatham and a 3rd against Mendham in 53 seconds. Ponzio returned to form in the 110m hurdles in a tight race to out-lean Chatham and earn 1st place overall in 15.2 seconds. Seniors Daniel Gallic and Zachary Leach were 2nd and 3rd to Mendham. In the 800m, juniors Lucien Bret and Todd Smith ran brilliantly to control the race and cruise to 1st and second against both teams in 2:03 and 2:04 respectively. In the 200m dash, juniors Bushell and Clovis returned to the track to secure 2nd and 3rd to both teams. Sophomore Jonathan Gels brought the team one step closer to victory with a near personal best in the 3200m to take 1st place against both teams. Bret and senior Neil Van Kirk doubled back to lock up crucial points to finish in 2nd and 3rd. In the cold wind, the battle-ready 4x400 team of Akakpo, Alessi, Bushell, and Clovis dominated to close out the track events with a rock-solid 3:42.
In the field events, Delbarton came up big as well. Senior Trevor Wyso led the charge in the throws with a victory against Chatham and Mendham in the discus. Junior Maximillian Markho took 1st in the shot put against Chatham and was 3rd against Mendham. Wyso was 2nd in the shot against Chatham. Daniel Gallic took 1st against both teams with a strong season debut in the javelin over 155 feet. Junior Agustin Rodriguez was 2nd against Mendham with a 112 foot throw. The high jump trio of senior Martin Hindelong, Leach, and Bushell swept both teams. Senior Alex Makovsky took 1st against both teams in the pole vault. Senior Dever Hanlon was 2nd against Mendham. Leach scored 2nd against Chatham and 3rd against Mendham in the long jump. Ponzio was 2nd in the triple jump against Chatham and junior Brendan Martin was 3rd with a new personal best over 39 feet.
