Delbarton Football returns to William O. Regan field this Saturday when the Green Wave host Super Football Conference rival Pope John.
The Green Wave bring their 3-0 record back home to face a tough Pope John team that is 1-2 on the season with loses to Bergen Catholic and DePaul. Delbarton has started the COVID-shortened season hot, with victories over Seton Hall Prep and DePaul before their big upset of Don Bosco Prep last Friday in Ramsey.
Since 2013, Pope John is 3-2 against Delbarton, but the Green Wave have won the past two meetings, 24-19 last year on Homecoming Day and 27-0 on October 6, 2018. Â
The Delbarton offense has been lead by senior QB
Cole Freeman, who has thrown for over 450 yards this season with 6 touchdowns, to only two interceptions. Freeman has also been a threat on the ground all season long, racking up over 185 yards and 3 rushing touchdowns.Â
Gary Lewis and
Aidan Papantonis have controlled the backfield for Delbarton, with over a combined 250 yards rushing on the season. On the receiving end,
Dylan Hakes,
Gary Lewis, Nick Petrillo and
David Link have been solid targets for Freeman, all with touchdown receptions this season. Look for them to have a big game against the Pope John defense on Sunday.
Defensively, the Green Wave have been solid up front all season long, keeping opponents to an average of 14 points per game.Â
Elijah Hills,
Dylan Miccolis, PJ Casale,
Chuck Nnaeto and
Matt Gemma have dominated the line of scrimmage, stopping the run all season long while getting pressure to the quarterback on almost every passing play. Azari Lewis and
Jake Jarmolowich have been tremendous help in the secondary, with Jarmolowich accounting for three interceptions this season.
