The Green Wave varsity football team upped its record to 6-0 on Saturday, defeating St. Joe's Metuchen 37-6 in Metuchen. The Green Wave gained 227 yards of total offense in the game, while holding the Falcons to only 118 total yards. The defense was strong once again, sacking the quarterback three times.
The offense was lead by senior QB
Cole Freeman, who was 5-12 for 60 yards in the air, including two touchdowns. On the ground, Freeman had 94 yards rushing and scored twice to help Delbarton extend its lead.
Gary Lewis chipped in with 18 yards on 6 carries and a touchdown.
The first quarter opened with Lewis punching in a 3-yard run, set up by the quick moving Delbarton offense. Freeman ran in his first TD of the afternoon, converting from 4-yards out, giving Delbarton an early 14-0 lead in the second quarter. Less that three minutes later, Freeman found the end zone once again, rushing for a 35-yard touchdown, his second of the afternoon. At the end of the half Freeman hit
Dylan Hakes for a 2-yard touchdown pass, extending the Green Wave lead to 28-0. This was more than enough for the vicious Delbarton defense.
Matt Gemma (7 TOT) and Pat Caughey (4 TOT) got to the Falcons QB early and often, sacking him 3 times on the day.
Jake Jarmolowich (6 TOT), RJ Martini (5 TOT),
Elijah Hills (6 TOT) and PJ Casale (5 TOT) were forces on defense all afternoon, keeping the Falcons offense to only 118 total yards. Early in the third quarter, PJ Casale stuffed a rushing attempt in the St. Joe's endzone for the second time this season, resulting in his second safety of the year. The ensuing drive found Freeman hitting Hakes once again for a 16-yard touchdown pass, extending the lead to 37-0. St. Joe's got on the board at the start of the 4th quarter, but the defense prevented any more damage.
Congrats to the football team on another stellar performance this year. For the final time this season, Delbarton returns to Regan Field this Saturday, November 21 to host Bergen Catholic. Kick off is set for 1:00pm and can be streamed on the NFHS Network.
Congrats and Go Green Wave!
