Varsity Football Drops Close Game to DePaul 14-7

Delbarton varsity football team, led by coach Brian Bowers, fell just short on Friday night under the lights in Wayne, dropping a 14-7 contest to DePaul Catholic.  The loss brings Delbarton's record to 3-2.

The Green Wave opened the game with an early lead.  Robert Russo scored from five yards out, giving Delbarton an early 7-0 lead.  In the second quarter, DePaul QB AJ Rodriguez scored on a 5-yard run, but missed the extra point, giving Delbarton a 7-6 lead into the third quarter.  Russo threw for 103 yards on the night, and ran for another 33, but a costly interception in the third quarter gave DePaul an opportunity and Rodriguez once again scored, this time from 5-yards out for the 14-7 lead.  That would be more than enough for the Spartans, who won the game by a 14-7 score.

Aidan Papantonis had a solid game on the ground, rushing for 74 yards, while David Link led the Green Wave with 72 yards receiving.  Defensively, the Green Wave were relentless all game long, keeping the Spartans off balance all night.  Dallas Hurley and John Riley had sacks, while Matt Gemma had 8 tackles, Pat Caughey had 7 and Jake Checchio led all defenders with 9 total tackles.

The Green Wave return to William Regan Stadium on Saturday, October 9 for a homecoming matchup with Don Bosco Prep.  Kick off set for 1pm! Roll Wave!
