For the first time since 2017, the Green Wave football is moving on, defeating Camden Catholic 42-14 on Saturday in the opening round of the NJSIAA Non-Public A playoff.
From the opening snap, to the final play, Delbarton dominated the field of play, keeping the Irish to only 14 points, scoring only in the first quarter and final play of the game. On only the third play of the game,
Aidan Papantonis scored his first touchdown of the game, scoring on a 26-yard touchdown run. After Camden Catholic responded with a long drive, resulting in a touchdown and two-point conversion for an 8-7 lead, Delbarton took the lead for good, with
Robert Russo finding
Dylan Hakes for a 7-yard touchdown pass. In the second quarter, Papantonis scored his second TD of the game, rushing for a 2-yard TD, giving Delbarton a 21-8 halftime lead.
The Green Wave put the game away in the third quarter, scoring three touchdowns for the 42-8 lead. Russo hit
Patrick Caughey for a 3-yard TD pass, followed by a
Na Sean Hill 2-yard touchdown run, converting off a fumble recovery a few plays earlier. The final score of the game for Delbarton went to
David Link, who scored on a 37-yard punt return.
Defensively, the Green Wave were all over the Irish quarterback, sacking him 13 times, including two each for
Jack Eisenhardt,
Matt Gemma,
John Riley and
Justin Slabaugh.
Jack Eisenhardt also had an interception and
John Riley had a fumble recover. Russo finished the day 9/10 for 141 yards and two touchdowns, while Papantonis finished with 82 yards on 7 carries and two touchdowns. Receiving,
Dylan Hakes led the Green Wave with 62 yards receiving, while
David Link had one catch for 37 yards and
Patrick Caughey had three catches for 34 yards and a TD.
