In one of the biggest upsets in program history, the Green Wave upset #3 seed St. Peter's Prep 35-12 on Saturday, November 12 in the Non-Public A quarterfinal at Caven Point.
Delbarton dominated the game from start to finish, led by the offensive line of
Tim Andersen '23,
Brendan Gay '23,
Jake Macce '24,
Ryan Cregan '24 and Frank Fehrenbach '24.
Ryan Trafford '24 had an incredible game on the ground, rushing 36 times for a whopping 282 yards and 3 touchdowns. "I think we've got the best running back in the state of New Jersey in
Ryan Trafford," Coach Bowers, the Delbarton coach, said. "I'd like to see someone better. All he does is grind. He's a gamer and just an amazing player."
The Green Wave jumped to an early 14-0 lead on two touchdowns in the first quarter after stopping St. Peter's on 4th down and recovering a fumble forced by
Matt Gemma '23, who returned to play for the first time since the second game of the season. Trafford rushed in the opening score from 44 yards out followed by
Robert Russo '23 hitting
Philip Folmar '25 in the corner of the endzone for a 24-yard touchdown.
St. Peter's would get on the board in the 2nd quarter with a touchdown pass, but the Green Wave would answer with a
Brock Dandridge '25 touchdown run from the 12 yard line.
Tyler DaSilva '24 had an interception late in the first half and Delbarton went into halftime leading 21-6. The Green Wave would take the 2nd half kickoff and march down the field with
Ryan Trafford '24 finishing the drive with a 31-yard touchdown. St. Peter's responded with a touchdown run of its own and the game headed to the 4th quarter with Delbarton leading 28-12.
Ryan Trafford '24 would score his 3rd touchdown of the game on a 16-yard run late in the 4th quarter, putting the game out of reach for St. Peter's Prep. Nick Dotro '23 broke up a St. Peter's 4th down pass late in the fourth quarter and
Troy Bailey '25 would intercept a pass on the Marauder's final drive of the game, giving
Robert Russo the ball in victory formation to finish the game. "This win means so much to this program," Trafford said. "We worked so hard this week to win this game and keep going. "It was so devastating losing last time on the last play of the game to lose to [St. Peter's]. That felt horrible. We kept losing close games as the season went on. We really needed this win. We prepared so well this week and worked so hard. Just means so much."
The Green Wave will take on Bergen Catholic on Saturday November 19 in the Non-Public A semifinal, with a trip to MetLife Stadium on the line. Kickoff is set for 1:00PM in Oradell. "These guys have believed in what we're doing and grinded for it," Bowers said. "We got a chance to go to Bergen Catholic and do something special again. We're not done with this ride."
