The Green Wave football team returns to action on Saturday August 27 to open its 2022 campaign. Delbarton is coming off of a 5-6 season which saw them fall to St. Augustine in the Non-Public A state quarterfinals. The 2022 season will be a special one for the Green Wave as it marks Head Coach Brian Bowers' 20th year as the program's head coach.
Rob Russo '23 returns under center for the Green Wave. As a starter last year, he threw for over 1800 yards and 16 touchdowns and will look to improve on that this season. This season, Russo says the goal is to be efficient in the passing game. With a veteran o-line, he should have plenty of time to throw the ball and make plays. The Green Wave also return four of five starters on the offensive line, led by seniors Tim Anderson '23 and Brendan Gay '23. "This year our strength lies in the front five on offense," says Brendan Gay. "We have four returning offensive linemen who have veteran experience. We have confidence in running the ball and we have the edge and drive to run it as well. We have an extremely physical offensive line that can create holes and let the running back and quarterback work."
The Green Wave offense turns to Ryan Trafford '24, Philip Folmar '25, and JP Cafasso '23 as play makers for Russo this season, taking over for a core of seniors who graduated in June. On the defensive side of the ball, Matt Gemma '23 and Nigel McSween '23 look to put pressure on opposing quarterbacks all season long. The linebacking core will be led by senior Jack Eisenhardt '23 and returns starters Johnny Riley '24 and Dallas Hurley '24. "We want to create as many turnovers as possible," says defensive leader and Army recruit Matt Gemma. "We feel when we can cause turnovers it really changes the momentum of the game and gives our offense some fuel." The Green Wave will open the season with three big games away vs. Seton Hall Prep, home vs. Bergen Catholic, and at St. Peter's Prep. They aim to gain momentum for the remainder of their schedule after a tough three-game stretch.
Good luck to Coach Bowers and the Green Wave as they begin their 2022 schedule in the Super Football Conference. Delbarton kicks-off the 2022 season this Saturday against Seton Hall Prep in West Orange. Game time is set for 2:00pm. The 2022 home opener will be September 10 against Bergen Catholic. Kick-off set for 1pm from Regan Stadium. Roll Wave!
