Fresh off a 4-1 road win over CBA, the Green Wave returned to the ice on Friday, January 6 to take on the Lion of Pope John at SportsCare Arena. Pope John (5-5) gave the Green Wave a big test on Friday, with Delbarton hanging on to a 2-1 home win, improving to 7-0. With the win in addition to the win over CBA, Delbarton is now the #1 ranked team in NJ as of January 9.
Only three minutes into the first period, the Green Wave went on the power play due to a major boarding penalty.
Trip Pendy would cut to the net and find
Nick Faccone for a one-timer who ripped it passed the goalie for a 1-0 lead, on Delbarton's first shot on goal of the game. Later in the first, Delbarton scored again on the power play, this time on a 5 on 3, as
Brandon Shaffer sent a shot from just inside the blue line passed the left skate of the goalie for the team's second power play goal of the game, giving Delbarton a 2-0 lead. With less than a minute left in the first period, Pope John would cut the lead to 2-1 on a beautiful give and go converted by Matt Hughes. However, that would be all the scoring the Lions would get for the rest of the game.
Jason Cai would make 14 saves, allowing just the one goal for his 7th win of the season. Delbarton turns its attention to a familiar opponent and rival Don Bosco Prep on Tuesday, January 10 at Sportscare Arena. Puck drop is set for 4:40pm.
