The Green Wave opened its quest for the 2023 Gordon Cup championship with a big 5-1 win over Pope John at SportsCare Arena.
The first period was dominated by Delbarton, with senior
Duncan Stewart scoring early and often, finishing the period with a hat trick, for a 3-0 lead. Stewart opened the scoring early in the first period on a tip in from a feed from
Nick Faccone and
Trip Pendy. Stewart would then make it 2-0 on the powerplay, ripping a shot stick side passed the goalie for a 2-0 lead.Â
Michael Padula and
Timmy Galvin would assist on the powerplay goal. Stewart would complete the hat trick tipping in a feed from
Trip Pendy for the 3-0 lead going in to the first break.
Nick Faccone would net his first goal of the playoffs in the second period one-timing a pass from
Trip Pendy for the 4-0 lead. Pope John would get on the board in the second period, cutting the lead to 4-1, but
Trip Pendy would seal the game in the third period for Delbarton, scoring his first of the postseason on the break off a feed from
Duncan Stewart and
Timmy Galvin. Â
Goalie
Jason Cai was once again a force in net, stopping 19 of 20 shots for the win. Stewart finished the game with 5 points (3 g, 2 a),
Trip Pendy had a four-point game (1g, 3 a) and
Nick Faccone finished with a goal and an assist. Galvin led the team with 3 assists on the afternoon.
The Green Wave will host Gloucester Catholic on Tuesday, February 14 in the Gordon Cup semifinal. Congrats on the win and best of luck Tuesday vs. Gloucester!
