Beginning in 1908, New York City has been home to the Millrose Games, the oldest and most prestigious professional track meet in the world. The meet has been home to world records, national records, and stunning performances time and time again. Every year, as part of the event, there is a Boys High School Mile that takes place during the professional competition. There are three automatic qualifiers for the event, the winners of three major invitationals from this winter season. In addition, there are also 10 other runners from around the country who are invited based on personal bests. Former winners of the high school mile include NCAA champions, USA champions, American Record holders, and Olympians. On this past Saturday night,
Collin Boler '23 joined the list of champions.
Delbarton was lucky enough to have two participants, Collin and
Brian Boler, in a deep national field of 13 total runners. When the gun went off, the brothers both got into strong position, but the race became very choppy as nobody wanted to take the lead. At halfway,
Brian Boler surged into the lead with his twin closely behind. Then, with 400 meters to go,
Collin Boler took over and held off runners from around the country using his dangerous kick. Collin closed his last 800 meters in an astounding 1:58.58 and final 400 meters in a blistering 57.49 to take home the victory for Delbarton in a final time of 4:09.15, a new personal best and the 9th fastest time in the country this year. Collin is actually the second Delbarton runner to ever win this race, following in the footsteps of the great Pat Schellberg from 2010. This was a historic achievement for Collin, who placed 4th in this race last year, and marks one of the most special days in Green Wave track history to have two teammates and brothers competing on such a competitive and prestigious stage. Delbarton is also the only school to have two separate winners of this event in history! Both Brian and Collin will continue their running careers next year at Princeton University.
Next up for Green Wave track is the Non-Public A Group Championships this Friday! Stay tuned for more updates and fast times as the Green Wave begins its championship season.
