The Green Wave Tennis team, led by coach John Thompson, spent the weekend in Newtown Square, PA at the annual Episcopal Academy Doubles Tournament. The tournament featured 16 teams from all over the Northeast, including New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Washington, D.C. and more. After two days of beautiful weather and intense tennis play, the Green Wave came out victorious, narrowly defeating Sidwell and Friends 24-22 for Delbarton's first ever tournament title.
All four doubles teams were successful on Saturday, each earning a spot in the semifinals. The first doubles team of
James Lian and
Hudson Bonetti won their semifinal match over Gillman and the fourth doubles team of
Jack Wells and
Gavin Tripido defeat Germantown Academy to reach the finals. Trailing Sidwell who had 22 points and three teams in the final, the Green Wave first doubles defeated Sidwell and Brunswick won at second and third doubles in the final round. Delbarton's fourth doubles team beat Landon School in the final for a second first-place finish for the Green Wave, clinching the tournament title.
While a tournament title is a big accomplishment, coach Thompson proudly accepted the tournament Sportsmanship Award. It is quite rare for a team to win both the championship and sportsmanship award in the same year.
Congrats to all the Green Wave on its first tournament title!
