Tennis Head Coach John Thompson Inducted Into 2025 NJ Scholastic Coaches Association Hall of Fame

Delbarton School proudly celebrated a historic milestone on January 11, 2026 as longtime tennis coach John Thompson was inducted into the 2025 New Jersey Scholastic Coaches Association Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony was held at Pines Manor, recognizing Thompson's remarkable career and lasting impact on New Jersey high school athletics.

Thompson was honored for his extraordinary tenure as head coach of the storied Delbarton tennis program, a position he has held since 1992. Over more than three decades, Thompson has established one of the most dominant programs in the state, amassing over 700 career coaching victories and setting a standard of excellence that few programs can match.

Perhaps most notably, Delbarton tennis has captured 23 of the last 24 Morris County Tournament championships, a testament to Thompson's consistency, preparation, and ability to develop elite student-athletes year after year. Under his leadership, the Green Wave have become synonymous with championship-level tennis, discipline, and sportsmanship.

Beyond the wins and titles, Thompson's influence has extended well past the courts. Known for his steady leadership and commitment to player development, he has shaped generations of Delbarton student-athletes, many of whom have gone on to successful collegiate tennis careers and continued involvement in the sport.

Thompson's induction further strengthens Delbarton's deep legacy within the NJ Scholastic Coaches Association Hall of Fame. He becomes the seventh Delbarton coach to receive the honor, joining an esteemed group that includes:

  • David Donovan (2006)

  • Wayne Gardiner (2000)

  • John Kowalik (2005)

  • William Regan (1965)

  • Chuck Ruebling (2005)

  • Bruce Shatel (2024)

Together, this group reflects the enduring strength of Delbarton's coaching tradition and its commitment to excellence.

Celebrating John's induction from Delbarton was Peter O'Connell, Mike Carr, Dan Whalen, Patrick Savidge, Dan Desplaines, Fr. Michael Tidd, O.S.B., Josh Hartle, David Donovan, Brian Bowers and Christopher Dittrick, along with former Delbarton employee Ed Thompson.
