Delbarton Alumnus Michael Zheng Earns First Grand Slam Win at Australian Open

Delbarton Tennis Alum Michael Zheng reached a major milestone on the international tennis stage this week, earning his first career Grand Slam match victory at the Australian Open.

Zheng outlasted fellow American Sebastian Korda in a grueling five-set battle, 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 6-7(0), 6-3. It marked Zheng's maiden victory in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament, achieved just days after he successfully qualified by winning three tough matches in the Australian Open qualifying draw.

Zheng's success at the Australian Open is the latest chapter in a remarkable journey that began at Delbarton School, where he established himself as one of the top high school players in New Jersey. A state singles champion, Zheng was known for his relentless work ethic, composure under pressure, and deep love for the game — traits that have continued to define his rise.

After Delbarton, Zheng went on to star at Columbia University.  While competing collegiately, he emerged as one of the nation's top players, earning national recognition and building the foundation for success on the professional stage.

In front of an international audience, Zheng showed poise and resilience in a long, physical match, ultimately closing out the win to secure his place in the second round. The victory marked a breakthrough moment — his first win in a Grand Slam main draw — and announced his arrival on one of the sport's biggest stages.

As Zheng continues his run in Melbourne, he carries with him the pride of Delbarton and the support of a community that has followed his journey from the start.  Zheng will face #32 ranked Corentin Moutet of France in the next round of the Australian Open.
