Varsity Football Takes Down St. Peter's Prep In Overtime

The 2023 home schedule for Delbarton's varsity football team kicked off in what many consider to be the most exciting game of the season, with Delbarton defeating the Marauders 27-20 in overtime.

St. Peter's Prep relied heavily on the run Saturday afternoon, with Jalen Cline leading the way with consistent runs over over 5 yards per carry.  St. Peter's would find the end zone first after a 0-0 first quarter, when quarterback Tyler Bell hit Andres Perez for a 40-yard touchdown pass.  The two-point conversion would fail, leaving Delbarton down 6-0.  That lead would stay through halftime with Delbarton's offense struggling to create plays and both teams defenses preventing big plays down the field.

The second half opened and Delbarton immediately responded.  After a solid kick return, Christian Zebrowski placed a perfect pass in stride to a wide open Philip Folmar who took it to the house 53 yards for the 7-6 Delbarton lead.  The Green Wave would hold on to the 7-6 lead into the fourth quarter, when both teams began to stretch the field, thanks to a very successful run game.  Cline would set up a 1st and goal situation for St. Peter's and Tyler Bell would run it in from 6 yards out to give The Marauders the 12-7 lead.  Another 2-point conversion would fail.  That lead would not stay as Ryan Trafford broke though the Marauders defense, scoring on a 44-yard run, extending the ball just over the end zone for the Green Wave touchdown.  A conversion would fail, giving the Green Wave a 13-12 lead.

Once again, St. Peter's would respond with a big drive, and Tyler Barksdale would take one in from 4 yards out for the 18-13 lead. St. Peter's would convert on the 2-point try, pushing the lead to 7, forcing Delbarton to score a touchdown. Matthew Tafuri set up the offense with a terrific kick return, giving Zebrowski plenty of time to operate.   With 25 seconds left, facing a 3rd and 5, Zebrowski ran for a first down and was able to stop the clock for a fresh set of downs, with only 18 seconds to play.  Zebrowski would pick up another first down and with only 12 seconds remaining before hitting Austen Kivler on the left sideline for a first down, and more importantly, stopping the clock with no timeouts let.  On the final play of regulation, Zebrowski rolled out, but with all receivers covered, he found the open field and took it in himself for the 15-yard game-tying touchdown.

In overtime, Delbarton would get first possession and Ryan Trafford would take it in from 5-yards out for the 27-20 lead.  In the ensuing possession for St. Peter's Prep, Tyler Bell would hit Dallas Reece on a slant, but on the one-yard line, Troy Bailey would strip the ball away from Reece and Delbarton would recover the fumble in the end zone for a touchback, giving Delbarton the unbelievable 27-20 victory.

In the victory, Trafford would finish with 110 yards and 2 touchdowns, while Folmar had 53 yards and a touchdown.  Delbarton has a short week to prepare as they travel to Clifton on Friday night.  Game time set for 7pm.
