The Delbarton lacrosse team wrapped up a memorable season with a commendable 15-8 record, showcasing their talent, determination, and resilience on the field. The highlight of the season was undoubtedly their triumph in the 2024 Morris County Tournament, where they secured the championship with a series of impressive victories. They bested Pequannock, West Morris, and Morris Knolls before clinching the title with a commanding 17-7 win over Chatham in the final at Fairleigh Dickinson University.
Throughout the season, the Green Wave demonstrated their prowess with significant wins over formidable opponents. A standout moment was their 8-0 shutout against Summit, a testament to their defensive strength and offensive efficiency, along with a strong season in goal by Patrick Roelke. Additionally, victories over Mt. Lakes and St. Augustine underscored their capability to compete at a high level.
The team was led offensively by Jack Sartorius, who topped the scoring charts with 37 goals and a total of 47 points. Willie Doyle contributed significantly with 30 goals, and Asher Testa added 28 goals to the team's tally. Their offensive firepower was a key component of Delbarton's success this season.
At the faceoff X, Ryan Trafford was a dominant force, winning 68% of his faceoffs, while Christian Troczynski also performed admirably, winning 63% of his faceoffs. Their ability to control possession was crucial in many of Delbarton's victories.
Defensively, the team was anchored by standout performances, and they will have the benefit of returning key players Will Pedicano and Bo Popham next year. Their presence will be vital as Delbarton looks to build on this season's success.
However, the season was not without its challenges. The team faced tough losses against strong out-of-state competition, including Chaminade, Malvern Prep, Fairfield Prep, and St. Anthony's. These matchups, while difficult, provided valuable experience and highlighted areas for growth.
In the Non-Public A state tournament, Delbarton showcased their skill and determination, advancing to the semifinals. They achieved hard-fought victories over Paul VI and Bergen Catholic, but their journey ended with a 10-4 loss to their rival, Seton Hall, on June 1.
Looking ahead, Delbarton will be losing a significant number of senior players who have been instrumental in the team's success. Despite this, the future remains bright. The rising seniors and a talented group of underclassmen, many of whom gained valuable playing experience this season, are poised to step up and continue the legacy of excellence.
