After seven years, with multiple trips back to the Prudential Center, the 2024-25 varsity hockey team reached the peak of the mountain, capping off an incredible season that wrapped up at the Rock on March 10 with a 5-1 victory over Christian Brothers Academy.
The Green Wave faced the #2 Colts for the fourth time this season, winning all four match ups against a very tough opponent. The first period saw both teams come out firing shots on net. Both goaltenders were solid in net in the opening period with a 0-0 tie after one.
In the second period, both teams broke though, with Delbarton striking first. Playing the puck in the neutral zone,
Egor Andreev skated through to create a two on one with
Jack Gerne, sending a perfect pass across the ice to Gerne who put the puck in the open net for the 1-0 lead. However, CBA would strike back shortly after, tying the score on a rebound off a
George Cote Save.
However, as Delbarton has done all season, the Green Wave reclaimed the lead as
Sean O'Gwen ripped a shot glove side for the 2-1 lead. In the last two games O'Gwen had scored three goals and five points, including the overtime winner in the semifinal round. "Sean found his confidence," Shatel said. "He shoots the puck a ton. He picked his spots at the right time and his shot is pretty lethal. The way he responded gave us the momentum right back instead of dwelling on it."
With 4:31 left in the period, Delbarton would get the insurance goal it would need, as
Dante Rodriguez would score off a feed in the crease from
Ayden Puppe to give Delbarton a commanding 3-1 lead heading into the final period of play.
The stingy Delbarton defense would have all it needed, and
George Cote was a brick wall on Monday, stopping any opportunity that developed. With 1:56 left,
Dante Rodriguez would score his second of the night, and
Jack Ross would score less than a minute later on the powerplay, to give Delbarton the 5-1 lead. As the clock ran down to 0, the team celebrated on the ice as the 2025 Green Wave became the 14th team to bring a state championship back to Delbarton.  "We want to win every year and our goal every year is to win our division, the Gordon Cup, and a state title. We did that this year," said captain
Jack Gerne.
George Cote made 29 saves in the win and
Dante Rodriguez would lead all scorers with 3 points on the afternoon. "I don't think people fully understand how difficult it is to finish and win on this day," Shatel said. "It's not an accident and not about lady luck. It's all about a whole variety of things. Staying healthy, playing well at the right time of the year, special teams. It had been too long for us."
