Junior running back Kobe Irby-Mason is starting to make his mark on Delbarton football. With two rushing touchdowns already this season, Irby-Mason is an athlete with goals as big as his game. But beyond the numbers, his story is about family, motivation, and the pursuit of team success.
A Memory to Last a Lifetime
For Irby-Mason, one moment already stands out above the rest in his Green Wave career: playing under the bright lights of an NFL stadium.
"My favorite memory as a Delbarton athlete was traveling with the varsity team to MetLife Stadium to face Bergen Catholic in the state final," he says. "Being part of that environment, with the energy of the crowd and the magnitude of the game, was unforgettable. It made me realize what it takes to get to that stage—and how badly I want to get back there and finish the job."
Inspired by Family
When asked what motivates him most, Irby-Mason doesn't hesitate.
"My mom inspires me every day," he says. "She pushes me to challenge myself, to learn something new, and to never settle. Watching her work hard and always strive to grow has made me want to do the same in my own life, both on and off the field."
It's that example of resilience and determination that fuels him during tough practices and in the weight room, as well as in the classroom.
Why Delbarton?
The decision to attend Delbarton was about more than athletics—it was about community.
"From my very first visit, Delbarton has felt like home," Irby-Mason recalls. "The scenery, the facilities, but most importantly the people—everyone was so generous and welcoming. I knew this was where I wanted to spend my high school years, and I haven't looked back since."
Pregame Vibes and Game Day Focus
I ask every athlete, how they prepare mentally and physically before a game or race. Every athlete has their own way of getting locked in before kickoff, and for Irby-Mason, it comes from music. His go-to pregame track? Rises the Moon by Liana Flores.
"It helps calm me down and center me before I step on the field," he says. "It's not the typical hype song people expect, but it puts me in the right mindset to perform."
More Than Football
If he weren't playing football, Irby-Mason says he'd be out on the soccer pitch. The speed, endurance, and footwork of the game appeal to him—and in many ways complement the skills he already brings to the backfield.
Goals and Aspirations
As he looks ahead, Irby-Mason's ambitions are clear.
"My biggest goal is to win a state championship with my teammates," he says. "I also want to be part of the best running back duo in the state."
With a backfield of Matthew Tafuri and Irby-Mason, along with the talent of Austin Kiely, the Green Wave certainly have a backfield that can compete with the best in New Jersey. With his talent, work ethic, and inspiration from family, Kobe Irby-Mason is determined to keep raising the bar—for himself and for Delbarton football.
